Adenosylhomocysteine is a natural byproduct of several biochemical reactions in the human body, particularly those involving methylation processes. It is formed when an enzyme called S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) transfers a methyl group (-CH3) to another molecule, resulting in the creation of S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH). This compound then needs to be converted back into homocysteine and adenosine by an enzyme called SAH hydrolase for further metabolism. Elevated levels of adenosylhomocysteine in the body have been linked to various health issues, including cardiovascular diseases and neurological disorders.
