Uses, traditional management, perception of variation and preferences in ackee (Blighia sapida K.D. Koenig) fruit traits in Benin: implications for domestication and conservation. (1/1)
(+info)Blighia is a genus of tropical trees in the sapindaceae family, including the species Blighia sapida, also known as "akee" or "blighia," whose fruit contains seeds that can cause toxicity if not properly prepared due to the presence of hypoglycin A and B.
"Blighia" is a genus of flowering plants in the family Sapindaceae, which includes the tropical tree species commonly known as "Akee." The Akee fruit is well-known for its distinctive appearance and edible arils, but it's also notorious for containing potentially toxic hypoglycin proteins in its unripe fruit and inner seed coat. Proper handling and preparation are crucial to safely consume this fruit.
The scientific name "Blighia" honors William Bligh, a British naval officer and colonial administrator who played a significant role in the transportation of the Akee tree from West Africa to the Caribbean during the late 18th century. The genus was named after him to commemorate his contribution to introducing this plant to new regions.

As Ben said, the plant looks very "Pedicularis-ish," but A.L. noticed the inflated calyx with four lobes and correctly identified the plant in the photo as Rhinanthus minor. Based on the whitish teeth on the corolla and the lines of hairs on two sides of the stem, as well as the mostly dentate leaves, I would call this Rhinanthus minor ssp. groenlandicus based on the most current understanding of the species. Like other plants in the Orobanchaceae, this species is a hemi-parasite that can sometimes obtain nutrients from the roots of nearby plants. "Rhinanthus" means "snout-flower," a reference to the nose-like appearance of the flowers ...
