Glucosinolate breakdown products as insect fumigants and their effect on carbon dioxide emission of insects. (1/6)
BACKGROUND: Glucosinolate breakdown products are volatile, therefore good candidates for insect fumigants. However, although they are insecticidal, the mode of action of such natural products is not clear. We studied the insecticidal effect of these compounds as fumigants, and monitored the production of carbon dioxide by the insects as a probe to the understanding of their mode of action. RESULTS: The fumigation 24-h LC50 against the house fly (Musca domestica L.) of allyl thiocyanate, allyl isothiocyanate, allyl cyanide, and l-cyano-2-hydroxy-3-butene was 0.1, 0.13, 3.66, and 6.2 microg cm-3, respectively; they were 0.55, 1.57, 2.8, and > 19.60 microg cm-3, respectively, against the lesser grain borer (Rhyzopertha dominica Fabricius). The fumigation toxicity of some of the glucosinolate products was very close to or better than that of the commercial insect fumigants such as chloropicrin (LC50: 0.08 and 1.3 microg cm-3 against M. domestica and R. dominica, respectively) and dichlorovos (LC50: < 0.02 and 0.29 microg cm-3 against M. domestica and R. dominica, respectively) in our laboratory tests. Significantly increased CO2 expiration was found in insects exposed to the vapor of allyl isothiocyanate, allyl thiocyanate and allyl isocyanate. Allyl isothiocyanate was also found to increase the CO2 expiration of the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana L.). CONCLUSIONS: Glucosinolate breakdown products have potential as biodegradable and safe insect fumigants. They may act on the insect respiratory system in their mode of action. (+info)H-bonding in protein hydration revisited. (2/6)
H-bonding between protein surface polar/charged groups and water is one of the key factors of protein hydration. Here, we introduce an Accessible Surface Area (ASA) model for computationally efficient estimation of a free energy of water-protein H-bonding at any given protein conformation. The free energy of water-protein H-bonds is estimated using empirical formulas describing probabilities of hydrogen bond formation that were derived from molecular dynamics simulations of water molecules at the surface of a small protein, Crambin, from the Abyssinian cabbage (Crambe abyssinica) seed. The results suggest that atomic solvation parameters (ASP) widely used in continuum hydration models might be dependent on ASA for polar/charged atoms under consideration. The predictions of the model are found to be in qualitative agreement with the available experimental data on model compounds. This model combines the computational speed of ASA potential, with the high resolution of more sophisticated solvation methods. (+info)A Crambe plant, also known as Crambe abyssinica, is a species of plant in the mustard family (Brassicaceae). It is native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Africa. The plant can grow up to several feet tall and has large, lobed leaves and clusters of small white flowers.
Crambe plants are not commonly used in medical contexts, but they do have some potential uses in the field of medicine. For example, the seeds of the plant contain a high level of erucic acid, which has been studied for its potential to lower cholesterol levels and improve heart health. However, more research is needed to confirm these potential benefits and to determine the safety and effectiveness of using crambe seeds or extracts as a medical treatment.
It's important to note that crambe plants and their seeds should not be consumed without first consulting a healthcare professional, as they can have toxic effects if not prepared properly.
The term "Crambe sponge" is actually a common name for a type of marine sponge, rather than a medical term. It's scientific name is *Crambe crambe*, which belongs to the family Crambeidae and the class Demospongiae.
This sponge species is commonly found in cold water environments, particularly in the North Atlantic Ocean. They are known for their large size and distinctive appearance, with a rough, horny texture and a yellow-brown or grayish color.
While not directly related to medical terminology, it's worth noting that marine sponges like Crambe sponge have been used in various medical and biomedical research contexts due to their unique chemical properties and potential bioactive compounds. However, the term "Crambe sponge" itself does not have a specific medical definition.
Medical Definition of Microbiota:
The community of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microscopic life forms, that inhabit a specific environment or body part. In the human body, microbiota can be found on the skin, in the mouth, gut, and other areas. The largest concentration of microbiota is located in the intestines, where it plays an essential role in digestion, immune function, and overall health.
The composition of the microbiota can vary depending on factors such as age, diet, lifestyle, genetics, and environmental exposures. Dysbiosis, or imbalance of the microbiota, has been linked to various health conditions, including gastrointestinal disorders, allergies, autoimmune diseases, and neurological disorders.
Therefore, maintaining a healthy and diverse microbiota is crucial for overall health and well-being. This can be achieved through a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, stress management, and other lifestyle practices that support the growth and maintenance of beneficial microorganisms in the body.
Genetically modified plants (GMPs) are plants that have had their DNA altered through genetic engineering techniques to exhibit desired traits. These modifications can be made to enhance certain characteristics such as increased resistance to pests, improved tolerance to environmental stresses like drought or salinity, or enhanced nutritional content. The process often involves introducing genes from other organisms, such as bacteria or viruses, into the plant's genome. Examples of GMPs include Bt cotton, which has a gene from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis that makes it resistant to certain pests, and golden rice, which is engineered to contain higher levels of beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A. It's important to note that genetically modified plants are subject to rigorous testing and regulation to ensure their safety for human consumption and environmental impact before they are approved for commercial use.
