Lipoma of the corpus callosum. (1/458)
Lipoma of the corpus callosum is a rare congenital condition, often asymptomatic, but which may present as epilepsy, hemiplegia, dementia, or headaches. This paper reviews the condition and reports the only two cases which are known to the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London. The second case demonstrated the value of computerised axial tomography (EMI scan) in making the diagnosis and showing associated anomalies. (+info)Cervical epidural lipoblastomatosis: changing MR appearance after chemotherapy. (2/458)
Lipoblastomatosis is a locally infiltrative tumor of embryonic fat. We describe the MR appearance of cervical lipoblastomatosis with epidural extension. The initial MR study showed features of a soft-tissue mass; a subsequent MR examination, performed after chemotherapy, depicted the lesion as a typical lipoma of high signal intensity on T1-weighted images and of intermediate signal on T2-weighted sequences. (+info)Tuberous sclerosis associated with multiple hepatic lipomatous tumors and hemorrhagic renal angiomyolipoma. (3/458)
We report a case of tuberous sclerosis associated with hepatic lipomatous tumors and renal angiomyolipomas. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a high echoic large tumor in the left kidney. A provisional diagnosis of angiomyolipomas of the kidney was made based on computed tomography. Subsequent laparotomy revealed that the extracted tumor was renal angiomyolipoma. It was also revealed that there was an association with hepatic lipomatous tumors thought to be lipomas or angiomyolipomas by liver biopsy. Nearly half of all cases of angiomyolipoma in the kidney are reported as occasional association with tuberous sclerosis complex, but lipomatous tumors in the liver are rare. (+info)Hibernomas are characterized by homozygous deletions in the multiple endocrine neoplasia type I region. Metaphase fluorescence in situ hybridization reveals complex rearrangements not detected by conventional cytogenetics. (4/458)
Hibernomas are benign tumors of brown fat, frequently characterized by aberrations of chromosome band 11q13. In this study, the chromosome 11 changes in five hibernomas were analyzed in detail by metaphase fluorescence in situ hybridization. In all cases, complex rearrangements leading to loss of chromosome 11 material were found. Deletions were present not only in those chromosomes that were shown to be rearranged by G-banding, but in four cases also in the ostensibly normal homologues, resulting in homozygous loss of several loci. Among these, the gene for multiple endocrine neoplasia type I (MEN1) was most frequently deleted. In addition to the MEN1 deletions, heterozygous loss of a second region, approximately 3 Mb distal to MEN1, was found in all five cases, adding to previous evidence for a second tumor suppressor locus in 11q13. (+info)Dandy-Walker syndrome associated with occipital meningocele and spinal lipoma--case report. (5/458)
A neonate presented with Dandy-Walker syndrome associated with occipital meningocele and spinal lipoma, manifesting as soft masses on the skull and lumbosacral regions. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a large posterior fossa cyst between the fourth ventricle and occipital meningocele, but the aqueduct was patent and there was no sign of hydrocephalus. A cyst-peritoneal shunt was emplaced at the age of 8 days followed by partial removal of the spinal lipoma and untethering of the cord at the 3 months. Follow-up examination of age 3 years found almost normal development, although the cyst still persisted. (+info)Targeted oncogenesis reveals a distinct tissue-specific utilization of alternative promoters of the human mineralocorticoid receptor gene in transgenic mice. (6/458)
The human mineralocorticoid receptor (hMR) is a nuclear receptor mediating aldosterone action, whose expression is driven by two alternative promoters, P1 and P2, flanking the two first 5'-untranslated exons. In vivo characterization of hMR regulatory regions was performed by targeted oncogenesis in mice using P1 or P2 directing expression of the large T antigen of SV40 (TAg). While transgenic P1.TAg founders rapidly developed lethal hibernomas from brown fat, cerebral primitive neuroectodermal tumors and facial leiomyosarcomas occurred in P2.TAg mice. Quantitative analyses of mouse MR (mMR) and transgene expression indicate that P1 promoter was transcriptionally active in all MR-expressing tissues, directing strong TAg expression in testis and salivary glands, moderate in lung, brain, uterus, liver, and heart but, unlike mMR, rather low in colon and kidney. Importantly, the renal transgene expression colocalized with mMR in the distal nephron. In contrast, P2 promoter was approximately 10 times less potent than P1, with no activity in the brain and colon. Several immortalized cell lines were established from both neoplastic and normal tissues of transgenic mice. These cells exhibited differentiated characteristics and maintained MR expression, thus providing useful models for further studies exploring the widespread expression and functions of MR. Our results demonstrate that hMR gene expression in vivo is controlled by complex regulatory mechanisms involving distinct tissue-specific utilization of alternative promoters. (+info)Combined anomaly of intramedullary arteriovenous malformation and lipomyelomeningocele. (7/458)
We report a rare situation in which a lipomyelomeningocele and an intramedullary arteriovenous malformation (AVM) occurred together at the T11-L1 level in a 44-year-old man. MR images showed a hypervascular lesion intradurally and a fatty component extradurally. Spinal angiography revealed this lesion to be an intramedullary AVM with multiple feeding arteries from the right T12 and left T10 intercostal artery and the left L1 lumbar artery, drained by tortuous, dilated, perimedullary veins. (+info)Multiple intracranial lipomas, hypogenetic corpus callosum and vestibular schwannoma: an unusual spectrum of MR findings in a patient. (8/458)
We describe imaging findings of a patient with multiple intracranial lipomas, hypogenetic corpus callosum and a vestibular schwannoma. We did not find association of intracranial lipomas and vestibular schwannoma in English literature. (+info)A lipoma is a common, benign (non-cancerous) soft tissue growth. It is composed of adipose or fatty tissue and typically found just beneath the skin, but they can also occur deeper within the body. Lipomas are usually round, moveable, and painless, although they may cause discomfort if they grow large enough to put pressure on nearby nerves or if they're located in a sensitive area. They generally grow slowly over time. Surgical removal is an option if the lipoma becomes bothersome or grows significantly in size. It's important to note that while lipomas are typically harmless, any new lumps or bumps should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other more serious conditions.
Neoplasms in adipose tissue refer to abnormal and excessive growths of cells that form tumors within the fatty connective tissue. These neoplasms can be benign or malignant (cancerous). Benign neoplasms, such as lipomas, are slow-growing and typically do not spread to other parts of the body. Malignant neoplasms, on the other hand, are cancerous and can invade surrounding tissues and spread to distant sites in the body (metastasis). An example of a malignant neoplasm in adipose tissue is liposarcoma. It's important to note that while some neoplasms may not cause any symptoms, others can cause pain, swelling or other uncomfortable sensations, and therefore should be evaluated by a medical professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Multiple Symmetrical Lipomatosis is a rare condition characterized by the growth of multiple, symmetrical fatty tumors (lipomas) beneath the skin. These lipomas are typically slow-growing and benign, but their large number and symmetric distribution can lead to significant cosmetic concerns and, in some cases, functional impairment.
The tumors usually develop on the neck, shoulders, back, and abdomen, and they may also occur on the arms and legs. While the exact cause of Multiple Symmetrical Lipomatosis is not known, it has been associated with alcohol abuse and metabolic disorders. Treatment typically involves surgical removal of the lipomas, although this can be challenging due to their number and location. Recurrence of the tumors is also common.
Liposarcoma is a type of soft tissue sarcoma, which is a cancer that develops in the soft tissues of the body, such as fat, muscle, nerves, blood vessels, and fibrous tissues. Specifically, liposarcoma arises from fat cells (adipocytes) or their precursors.
There are several subtypes of liposarcoma, which differ in their appearance under the microscope, genetic features, and clinical behavior. These include well-differentiated, dedifferentiated, myxoid, round cell, and pleomorphic liposarcomas. The most common sites for liposarcoma are the thigh, retroperitoneum (the area behind the abdominal cavity), and the buttock.
Liposarcomas can grow slowly or rapidly, and they may spread to other parts of the body (metastasize) through the bloodstream or lymphatic system. Treatment typically involves surgical removal of the tumor, often followed by radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. The prognosis for liposarcoma depends on several factors, including the type and grade of the tumor, its size and location, and whether it has spread to other parts of the body.
Lipomatosis is a medical term that refers to a condition characterized by the abnormal growth of fatty tumors (lipomas) in various parts of the body. These lipomas are benign, soft, and rubbery masses made up of adipose or fatty tissue. Unlike isolated lipomas, which occur as solitary lumps under the skin, lipomatosis is a more widespread condition where multiple lipomas develop in a diffuse pattern, affecting a particular region or area of the body.
There are different types of lipomatosis, including:
1. Diffuse Lipomatosis: This type involves the growth of numerous small lipomas distributed throughout the subcutaneous tissue, giving the affected area a doughy feel and appearance.
2. Adiposis Dolorosa or Dercum's Disease: A rare condition characterized by painful and tender lipomas typically found in the trunk, arms, and legs. It primarily affects middle-aged women and can be accompanied by other systemic symptoms like fatigue, memory problems, and depression.
3. Multiple Symmetric Lipomatosis (MSL) or Madelung's Disease: This condition predominantly affects middle-aged men, particularly those with a history of alcohol abuse. It is characterized by the growth of large, symmetrical lipomas around the neck, shoulders, and upper trunk, leading to a "horse collar" appearance.
4. Familial Multiple Lipomatosis: An inherited condition where multiple benign fatty tumors develop in various parts of the body, usually appearing during adulthood. It tends to run in families with an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance.
Treatment for lipomatosis typically involves surgical removal of the lipomas if they cause discomfort, limit mobility, or negatively impact a person's appearance. Regular monitoring and follow-up appointments with healthcare professionals are essential to ensure that no malignant changes occur in the lipomas over time.
An encyclopedia is a comprehensive reference work containing articles on various topics, usually arranged in alphabetical order. In the context of medicine, a medical encyclopedia is a collection of articles that provide information about a wide range of medical topics, including diseases and conditions, treatments, tests, procedures, and anatomy and physiology. Medical encyclopedias may be published in print or electronic formats and are often used as a starting point for researching medical topics. They can provide reliable and accurate information on medical subjects, making them useful resources for healthcare professionals, students, and patients alike. Some well-known examples of medical encyclopedias include the Merck Manual and the Stedman's Medical Dictionary.
Soft tissue neoplasms refer to abnormal growths or tumors that develop in the soft tissues of the body. Soft tissues include muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, nerves, blood vessels, fat, and synovial membranes (the thin layer of cells that line joints and tendons). Neoplasms can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous), and their behavior and potential for spread depend on the specific type of neoplasm.
Benign soft tissue neoplasms are typically slow-growing, well-circumscribed, and rarely spread to other parts of the body. They can often be removed surgically with a low risk of recurrence. Examples of benign soft tissue neoplasms include lipomas (fat tumors), schwannomas (nerve sheath tumors), and hemangiomas (blood vessel tumors).
Malignant soft tissue neoplasms, on the other hand, can grow rapidly, invade surrounding tissues, and may metastasize (spread) to distant parts of the body. They are often more difficult to treat than benign neoplasms and require a multidisciplinary approach, including surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Examples of malignant soft tissue neoplasms include sarcomas, such as rhabdomyosarcoma (arising from skeletal muscle), leiomyosarcoma (arising from smooth muscle), and angiosarcoma (arising from blood vessels).
It is important to note that soft tissue neoplasms can occur in any part of the body, and their diagnosis and treatment require a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional with expertise in this area.
A physical examination is a methodical and systematic process of evaluating a patient's overall health status. It involves inspecting, palpating, percussing, and auscultating different parts of the body to detect any abnormalities or medical conditions. The primary purpose of a physical examination is to gather information about the patient's health, identify potential health risks, diagnose medical conditions, and develop an appropriate plan for prevention, treatment, or further evaluation.
During a physical examination, a healthcare provider may assess various aspects of a patient's health, including their vital signs (such as blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and respiratory rate), height, weight, body mass index (BMI), and overall appearance. They may also examine different organ systems, such as the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, neurological, musculoskeletal, and genitourinary systems, to identify any signs of disease or abnormalities.
Physical examinations are an essential part of preventive healthcare and are typically performed during routine check-ups, annual physicals, and when patients present with symptoms or concerns about their health. The specific components of a physical examination may vary depending on the patient's age, sex, medical history, and presenting symptoms.
Retrospective studies, also known as retrospective research or looking back studies, are a type of observational study that examines data from the past to draw conclusions about possible causal relationships between risk factors and outcomes. In these studies, researchers analyze existing records, medical charts, or previously collected data to test a hypothesis or answer a specific research question.
Retrospective studies can be useful for generating hypotheses and identifying trends, but they have limitations compared to prospective studies, which follow participants forward in time from exposure to outcome. Retrospective studies are subject to biases such as recall bias, selection bias, and information bias, which can affect the validity of the results. Therefore, retrospective studies should be interpreted with caution and used primarily to generate hypotheses for further testing in prospective studies.
