Cucurbitacins
Two novel cucurbitacins, neocucurbitacins A and B, from the Brazilian folk medicine "Buchinha" (Luffa operculata) and their effect on PEBP2alphaA and OCIF gene expression in a human osteoblast-like Saos-2 cell line. (1/15)
Two novel cucurbitacins designated as neocucurbitacins A (1), possessing inhibitory activity of polyoma enhancer binding protein 2alphaA (PEBP2alphaA) and osteoclastogenesis-inhibitory factor (OCIF) gene expression in human osteoblast-like cells, and B (2) were isolated from the fruit of Luffa operculata. Their structures have been determined by extensive spectroscopic investigation. (+info)Relative population of S-form and F-form conformers of bryonolic acid and its derivatives in equilibrium in CdCl3 solutions. (2/15)
Relative populations of S-form (D-E rings: boat-boat form) and F-form (D-E rings: chair-chair form) conformers, in equilibrium in CDCl3 solutions, of 20 derivatives (2-21) of bryonolic acid (D:C-friedoolean-8-en-3beta-ol-29-oic acid) (1) were calculated from NMR spectral data (J-values and chemical shifts), with the aid of molecular mechanic calculation using a MM2/CONFLEX program system. The principal deciding factor of the population ratio was found to be whether the functionality at C-29 is trigonal or tetrahedral; the S-form: F-form was 0:100-32:68 for the "trigonal" type and 48:52-100:0 for the "tetrahedral." The reliability of the results is discussed. (+info)Two new cucurbitacin glucosides, opercurins A and B, from the Brazilian folk medicine "Buchinha" (Luffa operculata). (3/15)
The structures of two new cucurbitacin glucosides designated opercurins A (1) and B (2), isolated from the fruit of Luffa operculata, have been confirmed by extensive spectroscopic investigation. (+info)Morphosynthesis: high fidelity inorganic replica of the fibrous network of loofa sponge (Luffa cylindrica). (4/15)
High fidelity calcium carbonate and hydroxyapatite (bio) inorganic replicas of the fibrous network of the dried fruit of Luffa cylindrica are described, utilizing a facile synthetic route. The loofa sponge is a highly complex macroscopic architectural template, an inexpensive and sustainable resource. In the context of the morphosynthesis, the capability of replication of the loofa sponge opens the possibility of the use of biodiversity in obtaining new materials. We would like to emphasize that the template proposed in this paper, makes possible the preparation of inorganic replicas with a very desirable size, on the centimeter scale. This fact is innovative with respect to inorganic replicas described in the literature, which predominate at the micrometric scale, limited to the original size of the template. (+info)Luffa operculata effects on the epithelium of frog palate: histological features. (5/15)
Luffa operculata is the botanical name of buchinha-do-norte or cabacinha, which is a medicinal plant widely used for the treatment of rhinitis and rhinosinusitis. In Europe and USA, it is available in homeopathic medicines. In Brazil, Luffa operculata dry fruit infusion is inhaled or instilled into the nose releasing profuse mucous secretion, thus relieving nasal symptoms. Nevertheless, this often may cause irritation, epistaxis or anosmia. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The effects of Luffa operculata were evaluated in different concentration infusions, in isolated frog palate preparation, testing 46 palates after immersion. Four groups (n = 10) were tested with the infusion prepared with frog Ringer (isotonic): control; 60 mg/L; 600 mg/L; and 1200 mg/L. An additional group was tested using the infusion with water (600 mg/L H2O, n = 6). Epithelial samples were harvested to be studied under light microscopy and electron transmission microscopy. RESULTS: In treated palates, light microscopy findings were dose-dependent standard toxic changes. Electron transmission microscopy showed enlargement of intercellular spaces and tight junctions disruption, pointing to ion-fluid transport abnormalities. CONCLUSIONS: Luffa operculata infusion in currently used doses can promote significant structural and ultrastructural changes in the epithelium of this ex vivo model of respiratory mucosa. (+info)Dynamic seeding and perfusion culture of hepatocytes with galactosylated vegetable sponge in packed-bed bioreactor. (6/15)
A galactose moiety was introduced into the fiber surface of a vegetable sponge by the covalent binding of lactobionic acid. The galactosylated sponge was used as scaffold for the culture of rat hepatocytes in a packed-bed bioreactor. Hepatocytes could be dynamically seeded into and uniformly distributed throughout the scaffold, and the immobilized cells maintained high albumin and urea production rates during long-term perfusion culture. The hepatocytes showed an increasing albumin production rate from 49 to 109 microg/10(6) cells/d over the 7-d culture. (+info)Genetic analysis of fruit shape traits at different maturation stages in sponge gourd. (7/15)
The fruit shape is important quantitative trait closely related to the fruit quality. However, the genetic model of fruit shapes has not been proposed. Therefore, in the present study, analysis of genetic effects for fruit shape traits (fruit length and fruit perimeter) in sponge gourd was conducted by employing a developmental genetic model including fruit direct effects and maternal effects. Analysis approaches of unconditional and conditional variances were applied to evaluate the genetic behavior of fruit shape traits at economical and physiological maturation times. The results of variance analysis indicated that fruit length and fruit perimeter were simultaneously affected by fruit direct genetic effects and maternal effects. Fruit direct genetic effects were relatively more important for fruit shape traits at whole developmental period. The gene expression was most active at the economical maturation stage (1 approximately 12 d after flowering) for two shape traits, and the activation of gene was mostly due to direct dominance effects at physiological maturation stage (13 approximately 60 d after flowering). The coefficients due to different genetic effects, as well as the phenotypic correlation coefficients, varied significantly between fruit shape traits themselves at various maturation stages. The results showed that it was relatively easy to improve fruit shape traits for industrial purpose by carefully selecting the parents at economical maturation stage instead of that at physiological maturation stage. (+info)Alginate-loofa as carrier matrix for ethanol production. (8/15)
An alginate-loofa matrix was developed as a cell carrier for ethanol fermentation owing to its porous structure and strong fibrous nature. The matrix was effective for cell immobilization and had good mechanical strength and stability for long-term use. After a storage period of 4 months, yeast cells remained firmly immobilized and active. (+info)"Luffa" is not a medical term, but it is a botanical term that refers to the genus "Luffa" in the Cucurbitaceae family. It includes two species that are commonly used: Luffa acutangula (ridged gourd or angled loofah) and Luffa aegyptiaca (smooth gourd or Egyptian loofah). These plants produce large fruits with a fibrous interior that can be dried and used as natural sponges. While not a medical term, luffas have been used in some traditional medicinal practices for their supposed benefits to skin health and exfoliation.
Cucurbitaceae is the scientific name for the gourd family of plants, which includes a variety of vegetables and fruits such as cucumbers, melons, squashes, and pumpkins. These plants are characterized by their trailing or climbing growth habits and their large, fleshy fruits that have hard seeds enclosed in a protective coat. The fruits of these plants are often used as food sources, while other parts of the plant may also have various uses such as medicinal or ornamental purposes.
Ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs) are a type of protein that can inhibit the function of ribosomes, which are the cellular structures responsible for protein synthesis. Ribosome-inactivating proteins are classified into two types: Type 1 and Type 2.
Type 1 Ribosome-Inactivating Proteins (RIPs) are defined as single-chain proteins that inhibit protein synthesis by depurinating a specific adenine residue in the sarcin-ricin loop of the large rRNA molecule within the ribosome. This results in the irreversible inactivation of the ribosome, preventing it from participating in further protein synthesis.
Type 1 RIPs are found in various plant species and have been identified as potential therapeutic agents for cancer treatment due to their ability to selectively inhibit protein synthesis in cancer cells. However, they can also be toxic to normal cells, which limits their clinical use. Examples of Type 1 RIPs include dianthin, gelonin, and trichosanthin.
Cucurbitacins are a type of triterpenoid compound that are naturally occurring in some plants, particularly in the Cucurbitaceae family which includes pumpkins, cucumbers, and melons. These compounds have a bitter taste and are known for their potential medicinal properties, including anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, and antifeedant activities. However, they can also be toxic to humans and animals in high concentrations. Cucurbitacins have been studied for their potential therapeutic benefits in various medical fields, such as oncology, where they have been shown to inhibit the growth of certain types of cancer cells.
In medical terms, "seeds" are often referred to as a small amount of a substance, such as a radioactive material or drug, that is inserted into a tissue or placed inside a capsule for the purpose of treating a medical condition. This can include procedures like brachytherapy, where seeds containing radioactive materials are used in the treatment of cancer to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Similarly, in some forms of drug delivery, seeds containing medication can be used to gradually release the drug into the body over an extended period of time.
It's important to note that "seeds" have different meanings and applications depending on the medical context. In other cases, "seeds" may simply refer to small particles or structures found in the body, such as those present in the eye's retina.
