Terpenoids and sterols from Nepeta cataria L. var. citriodora (Lamiaceae). (1/7)
Isolation and GC/MS quantitative determination of ursolic acid in the herb of Nepeta cataria var. citriodora have been performed. The content of this compound was in the range 0.95-1.30%. Daucosterol (beta-sitosterol 3-O-beta-D-glucoside) was also isolated from the plant, in addition to small amounts of beta-sitosterol, campesterol, alpha-amyrin and beta-amyrin. The content and composition of essential oil in samples of the Nepeta cataria var. citriodora herb have been analysed as well. (+info)Essential oil of Actinidia macrosperma, a catnip response kiwi endemic to China. (2/7)
OBJECTIVE: To identify compounds that may be responsible for catnip response of Actinidia macrosperma, and compare chemical compositions in the wild and in vitro regenerated plants. METHODS: GC-MS and relative retention indices with n-alkanes as reference points were used for compound identification, and component relative percentage was calculated based on GC peak areas without using correction factors. RESULTS: There are 28 compounds (92.72%) and 15 compounds (93.88%) identified in the essential oils from the wild and regenerated plants, respectively. Dihydronepetalactone, iridomyrmecin, and dihydroactinidiolide, which are believed to be attractive to felines, are present in both wild and regenerated plants. Actinine was not detected, and beta-pheylethyl alcohol was only present in wild plant. In addition, short-chain enol derivatives, messengers in chemical communication, are commonly present in wild plant of A. macrosperma, but absent in regenerated one. CONCLUSION: Dihydronepetalactone, iridomyrmecin, and dihydroactinidiolide are responsible for the catnip response of A. macrosperma. (+info)Flavonoids and phenolic acids of Nepeta cataria L. var. citriodora (Becker) Balb. (Lamiaceae). (3/7)
Luteolin 7-O-glucuronide, luteolin 7-O-glucurono-(1-->6)-glucoside, apigenin 7-O-glucuronide as well as free aglycones luteolin and apigenin have been isolated from lemon catnip herb (Nepeta cataria L. var citriodora). Luteolin 7-O-glucurono-(1-->6)-glucoside is probably a new compound, for the first time described. Two minor constituents of flavonoid fraction have been identified as apigenin 7-O-glucoside and luteolin 7-O-glucoside by means of HPLC method. The percentage of total flavonoids determined by use of spectrophotometric method was in the range from 0.30 to 0.46% of dry mass. In phenolic acid fraction, caffeic, rosmarinic and p-coumaric acids have been identified. Total amount of phenolic acids determined by spectrophotometric method was in the range of 0.75% to 1.4 % and the content of rosmarinic acid quantified by HPLC method fluctuated in the wide range from 0.06% to 0.15% depending on the sample. The results of the investigations showed that the composition of flavonoid compounds and phenolic acids in lemon catnip are similar to those in lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.). The amount of flavonoids are similar in both plants, and the percentage of rosmarinic acid is about ten times lower in lemon catnip than in lemon balm. The presence of luteolin, apigenin and their glycosides, caffeic acid as well as the previously described terpenoids (ursolic acid, citral, nerol. geraniol) suggests the possibility of the use of lemon catnip herb as a constituent of phytopharmaceutical preparations with mild sedative, antispasmodic, antioxidative and antiinflammatory action. (+info)Antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of the essential oil and methanol extract of Nepeta cataria. (4/7)
Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is an important medicinal herb belonging to the mint family, Lamiaceae. In this study, the in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the essential oil and methanol extract from Nepeta cataria, and its essential oil composition were investigated. The essential oil, which has 4aalpha,7alpha,7abeta-nepetalactone (70.4%), 4aalpha,7alpha,7abeta-nepetalactone (6.0%), thymol (2.3%), and 4aalpha,7alpha, 7abeta3-nepetalactone (2.5%), as main components, exhibited activity against eleven bacteria, and twelve fungi and a yeast, C. albicans; with Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) values ranging from 12.50 to 250 microl/ml; the methanol extract showed weaker activity. The samples were also subjected to a screening for their possible antioxidant activities by using 2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and beta-carotene/linoleic acid assays. In DPPH assay, the extract showed slight antioxidant activity whereas the essential oil remained inactive. In the latter case, both the extract and the essential oil exerted weak activity having inhibiton ratios of linoleic acid oxidation at 16.4% and 27.0%, respectively. The weak antioxidative nature of the extract could be attributed to the low phenolic content, estimated as gallic acid equivalent at 22.6 +/- 2.07 microg/ml or 2.26%. In both systems, antioxidant capacity of BHT was determined in parallel experiments. (+info)Nepeta cataria L. var. citriodora (Becker) increases penile erection in rats. (5/7)

(+info)Differential effects of two strains of Rhizophagus intraradices on dry biomass and essential oil yield and composition in Calamintha nepeta. (7/7)
The aim of this work was to determine the effects of two geographically different strains of Rhizophagus intraradices (M3 and GA5) on the total biomass and essential oil (EO) yield and composition of Calamintha nepeta, with or without phosphorus (P) fertilization, under greenhouse conditions. The plant biomass was not significantly affected by any of the treatments, showing higher values in control plants. Strains had a differential response in their root colonization rates: M3 reduced these parameters while GA5 did not modify them. Both strains affected EO yield in absence of P fertilization: M3 promoted EO yield in C. nepeta plants and GA5 resulted in negative effects. The percentage composition of EO was not significantly modified by either strain or P fertilization. M3 strain could be a potential fungal bioinoculant for production and commercialization of C. nepeta in the aromatic plant market. (+info)"Nepeta" is a genus name in botanical taxonomy, which includes approximately 250 species of plants commonly known as catnips or catmints. The most well-known species is Nepeta cataria, which is native to Europe and Asia but has been naturalized in many parts of the world.
Nepeta plants are perennial herbs that belong to the Lamiaceae family, which also includes mint, sage, and basil. They have a square stem, opposite leaves, and small, two-lipped flowers that can be white, pink, or purple. The leaves and flowers of Nepeta plants contain volatile oils, including nepetalactone, which is responsible for their characteristic smell and is known to attract cats.
While "Nepeta" itself does not have a medical definition, some Nepeta species are used in herbal medicine for their sedative, calming, and anti-spasmodic properties. For example, Nepeta cataria has been traditionally used to treat anxiety, insomnia, and digestive disorders. However, it's important to note that the scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited, and more research is needed to confirm their safety and efficacy.
'Aspergillus ochraceus' is a species of fungi that belongs to the genus Aspergillus. The term 'Aspergillus ochraceus' is used in medical and scientific contexts to refer to this specific type of fungus. It is commonly found in soil, decaying vegetation, and other organic matter, and can also be found in indoor environments such as air conditioning systems, carpeting, and drywall.
While 'Aspergillus ochraceus' is not typically associated with human disease, it can cause invasive aspergillosis in individuals with weakened immune systems, particularly those who have undergone organ transplants or have certain types of cancer. The fungus can also produce toxins that can cause allergic reactions and other health problems in some people.
It's worth noting that while 'Aspergillus ochraceus' is a specific species of fungi, there are many other species of Aspergillus that can also cause human disease, including the more common 'Aspergillus fumigatus'.
I'm sorry for any confusion, but "Melissa" is not a medical term. It is a proper name, which is commonly used as a female given name in the English-speaking world. In botany, "Melissa" refers to a genus of aromatic herbs in the mint family, also known as lemon balm. The essential oil from this plant has been used in traditional medicine for its calming and soothing properties. If you have any medical concerns or questions, I would be happy to try to help if I can provide reliable and accurate information.
