A plant family of the order Pandanales, subclass Arecidae, class Liliopsida (monocotyledons).

Isolation and structure elucidation of two new alkaloids, pandamarilactonine-C and -D, from Pandanus amaryllifolius and revision of relative stereochemistry of pandamarilactonine-A and -B by total synthesis. (1/11)

Two new pyrrolidine alkaloids, pandamarilactonine-C and -D, were isolated from Pandanus amaryllifolius. Based on the total synthesis of pandamarilactonine-C and its related alkaloid, pandamarilactonine-A, the relative stereochemistry of pandamarilactonine-A and -B, which was previously proposed by spectroscopic analysis, was revised.  (+info)

Pacific pandanus fruit: an ethnographic approach to understanding an overlooked source of provitamin A carotenoids. (2/11)

Commonly recommended plant sources of provitamin A, such as dark green leafy vegetables, are not acceptable in many population groups. The objective of this study was to identify other indigenous foods that may be effectively promoted to alleviate vitamin A deficiency (VAD) and to gather information relevant to identification, production, acquisition, and consumption of foods relevant to a food-based VAD prevention strategy in the Federated States of Micronesia. An ethnographic study on edible pandanus cultivars, involving key informant interviews and observation was carried out. Analyses revealed a great range in carotenoid content. Several orange-coloured pandanus cultivars, all highly acceptable, contained high levels of carotenoid, almost meeting daily requirements in usual consumption patterns, whereas light yellow-coloured cultivars contained low levels. Availability has decreased substantially in recent years due to increased consumption of imported foods and general neglect of indigenous foods. High-carotenoid pandanus should be promoted for general enjoyment and health benefits.  (+info)

24-Ethyl,24-methyl-29-nor-lanostanes from leaves of Freycinetia formosana. (3/11)

Two new 24-ethyl,24-methyl-29-nor-lanostanes (1, 2) were isolated from the MeOH extract of leaves of Freycinetia formosana (Pandanaceae). Their structures were elucidated based on spectroscopic evidence.  (+info)

Verrucostoma, a new genus in the bionectriaceae from the Bonin Islands, Japan. (4/11)

Verrucostoma freycinetiae gen. et sp. nov. is described and illustrated from specimens on dead leaves of Freycinetia boninensis (Pandanaceae) collected in Hahajima, Bonin (Ogasawara) Islands, Japan. The genus is characterized by pale orange perithecia with protuberances around the perithecial apex, no color change in 3% potassium hydroxide and lactic acid, unitunicate asci, spinulose ascospores and an Acremonium-like anamorph. Morphological characters were compared with other genera in the Bionectriaceae and Nectriaceae (Hypocreales). Verrucostoma is morphologically similar to Bionectria (Bionectriaceae) from which it differs in the formation of conspicuous protuberances around the perithecial apex and the Acremonium-like anamorph. Moreover molecular analyses of Verrucostoma and other members of the Bionectriaceae and Nectriaceae based on alpha-actin, large subunit nuclear ribosomal DNA and RNA polymerase II subunit 1 sequences support the conclusions based on morphological data. Our results confirm that V. freycinetiae is distinct from other genera among the Nectria-like fungi and represents a new genus belonging to the Bionectriaceae.  (+info)

I apologize for any confusion, but "Pandanaceae" is not a medical term. It is a taxonomic category in botany, specifically the name of a family of flowering plants. The pandanus utilis plant, also known as fragrant screw pine or Asian screwpine, is a member of this family and is used in various culinary and medicinal applications in some cultures. Its leaves are often used for flavoring and coloring foods, and its essential oil has been studied for potential anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. However, the term "Pandanaceae" itself does not have a medical definition.
