A plant genus of the family ERICACEAE.
The science of studying the characteristics of the atmosphere such as its temperature, density, winds, clouds, precipitation, and other atmospheric phenomena and aiming to account for the weather in terms of external influences and the basic laws of physics. (From McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 6th ed)
A family of mainly aromatic evergreen plants in the order Laurales. The laurel family includes 2,200 species in 45 genera and from these are derived medicinal extracts, essential oils, camphor and other products.
Frozen water crystals that fall from the ATMOSPHERE.
A family of low molecular weight heat-shock proteins that can serve as MOLECULAR CHAPERONES.
The heath plant family of the order Ericales, subclass Dilleniidae, class Magnoliopsida that are generally shrubs or small trees. Leaves are alternate, simple, and leathery; flowers are symmetrical with a 4- or 5-parted corolla of partly fused petals.
A sweet viscous liquid food, produced in the honey sacs of various bees from nectar collected from flowers. The nectar is ripened into honey by inversion of its sucrose sugar into fructose and glucose. It is somewhat acidic and has mild antiseptic properties, being sometimes used in the treatment of burns and lacerations.

Search for polyprenols in leaves of evergreen and deciduous Ericaceae plants. (1/39)

Various species and cultivars of Ericaceae family were checked for the presence of long-chain polyprenols in their leaves. In the genus Rhododendron no polyprenols were found in the ever-green species, while they were present in the deciduous type. The polyprenols were of chain-length of 14-20 isoprene residues and they occurred in the form of acetic acid esters. The polyprenol accumulation is discussed with respect to senescence of leaves.  (+info)

Genetic structure of Rhododendron ferrugineum at a wide range of spatial scales. (2/39)

Rhododendron ferrugineum L. (Ericaceae) is a subalpine shrub found throughout the Pyrenees and Alps at elevations of 1600-2200 m. We examined relationships between genetic and geographic distance, using 115 dominant amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers to assess genetic structure over a wide range of spatial scales. We sampled 17 sites with distances of 4 km to more than 1000 km between them. At these scales we detected no association between geographic distance and genetic distance between populations. This suggests that genetic drift and gene flow are not in equilibrium for these populations. This pattern could have resulted from recent and rapid postglacial colonization, from more recent human disturbance, or as a function of frequent and random "natural" long-distance colonization. At two of our sites we used transects (two horizontal and two vertical with respect to slope at each site) to sample at distances ranging from 10 m to more than 5000 m. At this scale we observed a positive relationship between genetic and spatial distance along two vertical transects, one at each site. We hypothesize that isolation-by-distance at this smaller scale is a function of restricted gene flow via seed dispersal.  (+info)

Tyrosinase inhibitors from Rhododendron collettianum and their structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies. (3/39)

A new coumarinolignoid 8'-epi-cleomiscosin A (1) together with the new glycoside 8-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-6-hydroxy-2-methyl-4H-1-benzopyrane-4-one (2) have been isolated from the aerial parts of Rhododendron collettianum and their structures determined on the basis of spectroscopic evidences. Tyrosinase inhibition study of these compounds and their structure-activity relationship (SAR) were also investigated. The compounds exhibited potent to mild inhibition activity against the enzyme. Especially, the compound 1 showed strong inhibition (IC50=1.33 microM) against the enzyme tyrosinase, as compared to the standard tyrosinase inhibitors kojic acid (IC50=16.67 microM) and L-mimosine (IC50=3.68 microM), indicating its potential used for the treatment of hyperpigmentation associated with the high production of melanocytes.  (+info)

Rust fungi on rhododendrons in Asia: Diaphanopellisforrestii gen. et sp. nov., new species of Caeoma, and expanded descriptions of Chrysomyxa dietelii and C. succinea. (4/39)

Many rust fungi (Uredinales) that infect rhododendrons are difficult to identify because of similar spore size and overall morphology. As part of a morphological study of rusts in the genus Chrysomyxa, herbarium specimens of Asian rhododendron rusts were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. They were compared with similar taxa from Europe and North America. Revised and illustrated descriptions are provided for the uredinia and telia of Chrysomyxa dietelii and Chrysomyxa succinea; details of the conspicuous uredinial peridium of both species are described for the first time. A new genus and species, Diaphanopellis forrestii, is proposed to accommodate a rust fungus with uredinia covered by a peridium of ornamented cells (Aecidium-type) and teliospores enclosed in transparent outer sheaths. This species includes the previously described anamorphs Aecidium rhododendri and A. sino-rhododendri. Three new anamorphic species with unique urediniospore morphology also are described: Caeoma clemensii from Philippines, Caeoma spinulospora from Tibet, and Caeoma yunnanensis from Yunnan, China. For morphological and nomenclatural reasons Uredo rhododendri ('rhododendronis') is renamed as Caeoma dumeticola and Uredo rhododendri-capitati is transferred to Caeoma. A key to Asian rhododendron rusts that form uredinia is provided. In general morphological groups of rhododendron rusts correlate with the subgenera of Rhododendron on which they occur, suggesting coevolution of these parasites with their hosts.  (+info)

Divergent evolution of the chloroplast small heat shock protein gene in the genera Rhododendron (Ericaceae) and Machilus (Lauraceae). (5/39)

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Evolutionary and ecological roles of the chloroplast small heat shock protein (CPsHSP) have been emphasized based on variations in protein contents; however, DNA sequence variations related to the evolutionary and ecological roles of this gene have not been investigated. In the present study, a basal angiosperm, Machilus, together with the eudicot Rhododendron were used to illustrate the evolutionary dynamics of gene divergence in CPsHSPs. METHODS: Degenerate primers were used to amplify CPsHSP-related sequences from 16 Rhododendron and eight Machilus species that occur in Taiwan. Manual DNA sequence alignment was carried out according to the deduced amino acid sequence alignment performed by CLUSTAL X. A neighbour-joining tree was generated in MEGA using conceptual translated amino acid sequences from consensus sequences of cloned CPsHSP genes from eight Machilus and 16 Rhododendron species as well as amino acid sequences of CPsHSPs from five monocots and seven other eudicots acquired from GenBank. CPsHSP amino acid sequences of Funaria hygrometrica were used as the outgroups. The aligned DNA and amino acid sequences were used to estimate several parameters of sequence divergence using the MEGA program. Separate Bayesian inference of DNA sequences of Rhododendron and Machilus species was analysed and the resulting gene trees were used for detection of putative positively selected amino acid sites by the Codeml program implemented in the PAML package. Mean hydrophobicity profile analysis was performed with representative amino acid sequences for both Rhododendron and Machilus species by the Bioedit program. The computer program SplitTester was used to examine whether CPsHSPs of Rhododendron lineages and duplicate copies of the Machilus CPsHSPs have evolved functional divergence based on the hydrophobicity distance matrix. KEY RESULTS: Only one copy of the CPsHSP was found in Rhododendron. However, a higher evolutionary rate of amino acid substitutions in the Hymenanthes lineage of Rhododendron was inferred. Two positively selected amino acid sites may have resulted in higher hydrophobicity in the region of the alpha-crystallin domain (ACD) of the CPsHSP. By contrast, the basal angiosperm, Machilus, possessed duplicate copies of the CPsHSP, which also differed in their evolutionary rates of amino acid substitutions. However, no apparent relationship of ecological relevance toward the positively selected amino acid sites was found in Machilus. CONCLUSIONS: Divergent evolution was found for both Rhododendron lineages and the paralogues of CPsHSP in Machilus that were directed to the shift in hydrophobicity in the ACD and/or methionine-rich region, which might have played important roles in molecular chaperone activity.  (+info)

Mad honey poisoning-related asystole. (6/39)

Mad honey poisoning is well known in the eastern Black Sea region of Turkey. The cause of the poisoning is the toxin grayanotoxin, found in honey obtained from the nectar of Rhododendron species on the mountains in the region. A 60-year-old man was brought to the emergency department with dizziness and syncope after eating a few spoonfuls of honey. While the patient was being treated, bradycardia and asystole developed. The patient was given 0.5 mg of atropine, and asystole began and ended. The patient was transferred to the catheter laboratory and a temporary pacemaker was implanted. Mad honey poisoning related asystole has not been previously reported, and the rapid response to atropine is significant.  (+info)

Cardiac problems in mad-honey intoxication. (7/39)

Mad-honey disease or honey intoxication is caused by consuming honey produced from leaves and flowers of the Rhododendron family. Here a case of honey intoxication with cardiac involvement is reported.  (+info)

Grayanotoxin poisoning from Rhododendron simsii in an infant. (8/39)

We report a case of severe poisoning in a 57-day-old infant who presented with vomiting, convulsions, and shock after ingesting a bottle of milk containing a decoction of Rhododendron simsii. The grandmother collected this toxic plant from a cultivated area, believing it was good for the airways. Grayanotoxin was detected in both the urine and plant specimens. The infant made a good recovery after requiring ventilatory support for 2 days. Rhododendron is a common gardening shrub in Hong Kong. Some Rhododendron species are poisonous and contain grayanotoxin. Intentional or accidental ingestion of toxic plants can be severe or even life-threatening. It is therefore essential that clinicians be familiar with local toxic plant species.  (+info)

I'm sorry for any confusion, but "Rhododendron" is not a medical term. It is a genus of woody plants in the heath family Ericaceae, which includes shrubs and small trees commonly known as rhododendrons and azaleas. Some species contain toxic compounds that can cause health issues if ingested, but "Rhododendron" itself is not a medical term or concept.

I'm sorry for any confusion, but "Meteorology" is not a medical term. It is a branch of the atmospheric sciences which includes atmospheric chemistry and atmospheric physics with a major focus on weather forecasting. Meteorological phenomena are of interest to the field of aviation medicine, but meteorology itself is not a medical discipline.

I apologize for any confusion, but "Lauraceae" is not a medical term. It is a taxonomic category in botany, referring to the Laurel family of plants, which includes several genera and species of trees and shrubs. Some well-known members of this family include laurels, cinnamon, bay leaves, and avocados.

If you have any questions related to medical terminology or health sciences, I would be happy to help. Please provide me with the necessary details so I can offer an accurate response.

I'm sorry for any confusion, but "Snow" is not a medical term. It is a natural phenomenon and a common type of precipitation that occurs when water vapor in the atmosphere freezes into ice crystals. If you have any medical concerns or questions, I would be happy to try to help answer those!

Small Heat Shock Proteins (sHSPs) are a group of conserved molecular chaperones that play a crucial role in protecting cells from various stress conditions. They are named "heat shock proteins" because their expression is induced by heat shock and other stressful conditions, such as exposure to toxins, radiation, or infection.

Small Heat Shock Proteins are characterized by their low molecular weight, typically ranging between 12-43 kDa, and their ability to form large oligomeric complexes. These proteins function to prevent protein aggregation under stress conditions by binding to exposed hydrophobic regions of partially folded or denatured proteins, thereby preventing irreversible aggregation and promoting protein refolding.

sHSPs have been implicated in various cellular processes, including protein folding, protein degradation, signal transduction, and apoptosis. They are expressed in a wide range of tissues and organisms, from bacteria to humans, highlighting their essential role in maintaining cellular homeostasis. Mutations in sHSP genes have been associated with various human diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders, cataracts, and heart disease.

Ericaceae is a family of flowering plants, also known as heath family or heather family. It includes a number of genera with over 4000 species, many of which are evergreen shrubs and trees. Some well-known members of this family include blueberries, cranberries, rhododendrons, azaleas, and heathers. These plants typically prefer acidic soils and are often found in woodland, mountain, and coastal habitats.

I'm sorry for any confusion, but "honey" is not typically considered a medical term. It is a natural sweet substance produced by honeybees from the nectar of flowers. Honey is composed primarily of fructose and glucose, with small amounts of other sugars, water, proteins, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and various organic compounds.

While honey does have some potential health benefits, such as its antimicrobial properties and its use in wound healing, it is not a medical treatment or intervention. If you have any questions about the medicinal uses of honey or its role in health, I would recommend consulting with a healthcare professional.
