Eucosterol oligoglycosides isolated from Scilla scilloides and their anti-tumor activity. (1/6)
Two new eucosterol oligoglycosides, 15-deoxo-30-hydroxyeucosterol 3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[(beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-beta-D-gluco pyranosyl-(1-->2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (scillanoside L-1, 1) and 3beta,31-dihydroxy-17alpha,23-epoxy-5alpha-lanost-8-en-23,26-olactone 3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-beta-D-glucop yranosyl-(1-->2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (scillanoside L-2, 2), were isolated from the bulbs of Scilla scilloides, together with four that were known (3-6), have been isolated from the bulbs of Scilla scilloides. The structures of the new compounds were determined on the basis of spectroscopic and chromatographic methods, and some chemical transformations were discussed. Amongst the isolated compounds, 3 showed the most significant cytotoxicity against tumor cells tested several types with ED(50) value of 1.53-3.06 nM. In vivo experiments, 3 apparently increased the life span of mice bearing Sarcoma 180 tumor cell with T/C value of 239% at dose of 3 mg/kg. A new homostilbene, named scillabene A (2), and two new homoisoflavones, named scillavones A (3) and B (4), were isolated from the bulbs of Scilla scilloides DRUCE (Liliaceae) along with 13 known compounds comprising a homostilbene, seven homoisoflavones, a xanthone, a lignan, and three nortriterpenes. The structures of 2-4 were characterized as 3,5,4'-trihydroxy-3'-methoxy-4-methyl-trans-stilbene, (3R)-5,7,2'-trihydroxy-3',4'-dimethoxyspiro{2H-1-benzopyran-7'-bicyclo[4,2,0]octa [1,3,5]-trien}-4-one and (3S)-3-(3,4-dihydroxybenzyl)-5-hydroxy-6,7-dimethoxychroman-4-one, respectively, on the basis of spectroscopic data and X-ray crystallographic analysis. Three new norlanostane-type triterpene glycosides, scillanostasides A, B, and C, and two new lanostane-type triterpene glycosides, scillanostasides D and E, were isolated from the bulbs of Scilla scilloides Druce (Liliaceae) along with one known norlanostane-type triterpene heptaglycoside, scillascilloside G-1. Their chemical structures were determined on the basis of spectroscopic data as well as chemical evidence. (+info)Two new nortriterpenoid glycosides and a new phenylpropanoid glycoside from the bulbs of Scilla scilloides. (4/6)
Two new norlanostane-type triterpenoid glycosides and a new phenylpropanoid glycoside were isolated from the bulbs of Scilla scilloides DRUCE (Liliaceae), along with two known alkaloids. Their chemical structures were determined on the basis of spectroscopic data as well as chemical evidence. (+info)Five new nortriterpenoid glycosides from the bulbs of Scilla scilloides. (5/6)
Five new norlanostane-type triterpenoid glycosides were isolated from the bulbs of Scilla scilloides DRUCE (Liliaceae). Their chemical structures were determined on the basis of spectroscopic data as well as chemical evidence. (+info)Anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects of a methanol extract from bulbs of Scilla scilloides. (6/6)
The extract from bulbs of Scilla scilloides exhibited inhibitory effects in lipoxygenase and hyaluronidase assays and various oxidation models in vitro. Incubating the cells in the presence of this extract ameliorated t-butyl hydroperoxide-induced cytotoxicity from 27% to 57% in a macrophage model. The results may indicate the potential role of S. scilloides for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects. (+info)"Scilla" is a term that refers to a genus of plants in the family Asparagaceae, specifically within the subfamily Scilloideae. These plants are commonly known as "squills" and are native to Mediterranean regions, South Africa, and parts of Asia. They are perennial herbs with linear leaves and bell-shaped flowers that can be blue, white, or pink.
In a medical context, the term "scilla" may also refer to a medication derived from the dried bulb of Scilla maritima (also known as European Squill), which contains cardiac glycosides such as scillaren A and B. This medication has been used in the past as an expectorant, diuretic, and heart stimulant, although its use is not widespread in modern medicine due to the availability of safer and more effective alternatives.
It's important to note that "scilla" should not be confused with "skullcap," which is a different plant species (Scutellaria lateriflora) used in herbal medicine for its sedative and anxiolytic properties.

Genus10
- Scilla (/ˈsɪlə/) is a genus of about 30 to 80 species of bulb-forming perennial herbaceous plants in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae. (wikipedia.org)
- The genus Scilla has a long and complicated history in terms of its classification, circumscription and subdivision, and is not fully resolved. The genus Scilla was first formally described by Linnaeus in 1753, and hence bears his name as the botanical authority, Scilla L.. In Scilla, he included a six plants previously considered as Hyacinthus. (wikipedia.org)
- In all, Linnaeus listed eight species of Scilla, from the Mediterranean area, Europe and southwest Asia, and placed the genus in the grouping Hexandria Monogynia (6 stamens, 1 pistil) within his system of sexual classification (systema sexuale). (wikipedia.org)
- On the basis that the seed morphology distinguished this species from all the other Linnean Scilla, Steinheil reclassified it as a member of a novel genus, Urginea, now submerged in Drimia as Drimia maritima. (wikipedia.org)
- For some time, Chionodoxa had been considered a possible synonym to Scilla bifolia L. and molecular methods failed to support the existence of a separate genus, but rather its specimens appeared intermixed with those of Scilla. (wikipedia.org)
- It was therefore proposed that Chionodoxa be considered an obsolete genus and be submerged within Scilla. (wikipedia.org)
- Subsequently it was proposed that the species of Scilla be split into two sections, Chionodoxa that would include those taxa previously considered to belong in the genus Chionodoxa, and Scilla which would contain the remainder. (wikipedia.org)
- The precise number of Scilla species in the genus depends on which proposals to split the genus are accepted. (wikipedia.org)
