(+info)Slit Ventricle Syndrome (SVS) is not a formally recognized medical condition with a universally accepted definition in the medical community. However, it is often informally used to describe a situation in which the ventricular system of the brain appears to have very narrow or slit-like lateral ventricles on imaging studies, usually computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in the context of shunted hydrocephalus.
In hydrocephalus, there is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the ventricles of the brain, which can cause increased intracranial pressure and damage to the surrounding brain tissue. Shunting procedures are often performed to divert the excess CSF from the ventricles to another location in the body where it can be absorbed.
Slit Ventricle Syndrome is thought to occur when the shunt system functions too efficiently, causing the ventricles to collapse or become very narrow. This can lead to a variety of symptoms, including headaches, nausea, vomiting, and changes in mental status, due to intermittent underdrainage of CSF. The diagnosis of SVS is typically made based on clinical symptoms and imaging studies, and management may involve adjusting or replacing the shunt system to achieve optimal CSF drainage.
