Antioxidant activity of extracts from Euryale ferox seed. (1/9)

Euryale ferox has been widely used in traditional oriental medicine to treat a variety of illness. However, very little is known about the cellular actions by which this plant mediates its therapeutic effects. Various aspects of antioxidant activity were evaluated in total extracts and fractions derived from Euryale ferox. Total extracts (IC50 5.6 microg/ml) showed relatively high level radical scavenging activity toward 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and also enhanced viability of Chinese hamster lung fibroblast (V79-4) cells under exposure to oxidative agents. Upon further fractionation, the highest levels of DPPH radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activities were found in the ethyl acetate and butanol fractions. The ethyl acetate fractions, the butanol fractions, and total extracts of Euryale ferox also dose-dependently enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase in V79-4 cells. Of these three antioxidant enzymes, glutathione peroxidase activity was most strongly induced. Taken together, our findings show that Euryale ferox contains a significant antioxidant activity and that specific components in the ethyl acetate and butanol fractions may play an important role in mediating these antioxidant properties.  (+info)

Cretaceous flowers of Nymphaeaceae and implications for complex insect entrapment pollination mechanisms in early angiosperms. (2/9)

Based on recent molecular systematics studies, the water lily lineage (Nymphaeales) provides an important key to understanding ancestral angiosperm morphology and is of considerable interest in the context of angiosperm origins. Therefore, the fossil record of Nymphaeales potentially provides evidence on both the timing and nature of diversification of one of the earliest clades of flowering plants. Recent fossil evidence of Turonian age (approximately 90 million years B.P.) includes fossil flowers with characters that, upon rigorous analysis, firmly place them within Nymphaeaceae. Unequivocally the oldest floral record of the Nymphaeales, these fossils are closely related to the modern Nymphaealean genera Victoria (the giant Amazon water lily) and Euryale. Although the fossils are much smaller than their modern relatives, the precise and dramatic correspondence between the fossil floral morphology and that of modern Victoria flowers suggests that beetle entrapment pollination was present in the earliest part of the Late Cretaceous.  (+info)

In vitro screening of traditionally used medicinal plants in China against enteroviruses. (3/9)

AIM: To search for new antiviral agents from traditional Chinese medicine, specifically anti-enteroviruses agents. METHODS: The aqueous extracts (AE) of more than 100 traditionally used medicinal plants in China were evaluated for their in vitro anti-Coxsackie virus B3 activities with a MTT-based colorimetric assay. RESULTS: The test for AE of 16 plants exhibited anti-Coxsackie virus B3 activities at different magnitudes of potency. They can inhibit three steps (inactivation, adsorption and replication) during the infection. Among the 16 plants, Sargentodoxa cuneata (Oliv.) Rehd. et Wils., Sophora tonkinensis Gapnep., Paeonia veitchii Lynch, Spatholobus suberectus Dunn. and Cyrtomium fortunei J. sm. also have activity against other enterovirus, including Coxsackie virus B5, Polio virus I, Echo virus 9 and Echo virus 29. Cell cytotoxic assay demonstrated that all tested AE had CC50 values higher than their EC50 values. CONCLUSION: The sixteen traditionally used medicinal plants in China possessed antiviral activity, and some of them merit further investigations.  (+info)

Nymphaeaceae is not a medical term, but a taxonomic category in botany. It refers to the water lily family, which includes several genera and species of aquatic plants. These plants are known for their large, showy flowers and often used in ornamental ponds and gardens.

While Nymphaeaceae is not a medical term itself, some of its members have been used in traditional medicine for various purposes. For example, the rhizomes of some species of Nymphaea have been used to treat skin conditions, inflammation, and anxiety. However, it's important to note that the use of these plants as medicinal remedies has not been extensively studied or proven in modern clinical trials, so their effectiveness and safety are not well established.

"Nymphaea" is a botanical term for a genus of flowering plants commonly known as water lilies. They are not typically used in medical definitions, but I can provide some information about their medicinal properties or uses if that would be helpful.

Water lilies have been used in traditional medicine for various purposes, including treating anxiety, insomnia, and skin conditions. The roots, leaves, and flowers of the plant contain various compounds with potential therapeutic effects, such as alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins. However, it's important to note that most of these uses have not been extensively studied in clinical trials, and more research is needed before any definitive medical claims can be made about the benefits of Nymphaea species.

If you have a specific question about the medicinal properties or uses of water lilies, I'd be happy to try and help answer it!
