Adeno-associated virus (AAV) is a non-envoloped, small single-strand DNA virus that can infect both non-dividing and dividing cells. AAV is not able to cause disease and only has a very mild immune response. Additionally, rAAV vectors are capable of mediating long-term gene expression. These features make rAAV preferable for gene transfer to different types of cells.
