It depends on what disease or cancer or tumor you are talking about.

If you are interested in knowing the Colon Cancer Causes and Risk Factors:

Factors that may increase your risk of colon cancer include:

  • Older age. The great majority of people diagnosed with colon cancer are older than 50. Colon cancer can occur in younger people, but it occurs much less frequently.
  • African-American race. African-Americans have a greater risk of colon cancer than do people of other races.
  • A personal history of colorectal cancer or polyps. If you've already had colon cancer or adenomatous polyps, you have a greater risk of colon cancer in the future.
  • Inflammatory intestinal conditions. Chronic inflammatory diseases of the colon, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, can increase your risk of colon cancer.
  • Inherited syndromes that increase colon cancer risk. Genetic syndromes passed through generations of your family can increase your risk of colon cancer. These syndromes include familial adenomatous polyposis and hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer, which is also known as Lynch syndrome.
  • Family history of colon cancer. You're more likely to develop colon cancer if you have a parent, sibling or child with the disease. If more than one family member has colon cancer or rectal cancer, your risk is even greater.
  • Low-fiber, high-fat diet. Colon cancer and rectal cancer may be associated with a diet low in fiber and high in fat and calories. Research in this area has had mixed results. Some studies have found an increased risk of colon cancer in people who eat diets high in red meat and processed meat.
  • A sedentary lifestyle. If you're inactive, you're more likely to develop colon cancer. Getting regular physical activity may reduce your risk of colon cancer.
  • Diabetes. People with diabetes and insulin resistance have an increased risk of colon cancer.
  • Obesity. People who are obese have an increased risk of colon cancer and an increased risk of dying of colon cancer when compared with people considered normal weight.
  • Smoking. People who smoke may have an increased risk of colon cancer.
  • Alcohol. Heavy use of alcohol increases your risk of colon cancer.
  • Radiation therapy for cancer. Radiation therapy directed at the abdomen to treat previous cancers increases the risk of colon and rectal cancer.

During the treatment of any type of cancer staging is referred to as the means of classifying cancer by the location and size of the cancer cells. Whether it’s a lung, breast, colon, skin or mouth cancer the stages varies from stage 1 which is the least advanced stage to stage 4 which is known as the most advanced or the last stage of cancer. Knowing the stages of a cancer helps the doctor or the physician to decide the best treatment plan that will exactly match your requirements.

When a particular type of cancer is diagnosed at stage 4 then many people worry about where to land up for an affective treatment option. But with all the modern medical science advancements treating a cancer at stage 4 is not at all a big task today.

Information about the stage 4 cancer

It’s a known fact that as the cancer advances to higher stages it becomes more complicated and pain giving. In the beginning three stages of any type of cancer the cancer remains small and confined to a particular area without spreading in the lymph nodes and other organs of the body.

But as these three stages are crossed and the cancer advances to the fourth stage it gradually increases in size and starts invading the lymph nodes as well the other organs of the body. When the cancer reaches the fourth stage it becomes difficult to treat it and in some cases if not taken proper care can lead to death of the person. Following are a brief description of the stage 4 of few very prominent type of cancers:

- In the stage 4 of the breast cancer the tumor can be of any size and shape. The lymph nodes and the armpit in most of the cases become badly affected and the cancer starts spreading to lymph nodes and distant organs such as lungs, livers or bones.

- Here the cancer spreads to another lobe of the lung from where it started or to any other distant part of the body like livers or the bones.

- This stage of liver cancer is further subdivided into two stages namely A & B. In the stage 4(A) the cancer spreads to lymph nodes and other nearby organs of the body like one or more lobe of the liver, the main blood vessel etc. In the stage 4(B) the cancer increases to any size and shape and spreads to the lymph nodes that are far away for the liver.

- The cancer has spread to body organs such as liver or lungs but if the cancer is confined to the surface of the liver without penetrating into it then it is considered to be the stage 3.

  • Breast Cancer
  • Lung Cancer
  • Primary Liver Cancer
  • Ovarian Cancer

In this way from the above given data it can be clearly concluded that stage 4 of any type of cancer is quite fatal and if not diagnosed at proper time then it can lead to serious complications and even death of the person so it is advisable to go for a Master Health Checkup or an executive health chekup once  you cross 40 years of age.
