Branch architecture, light interception and crown development in saplings of a plagiotropically branching tropical tree, Polyalthia jenkinsii (Annonaceae). (1/5)
To investigate crown development patterns, branch architecture, branch-level light interception, and leaf and branch dynamics were studied in saplings of a plagiotropically branching tree species, Polyalthia jenkinsii Hk. f. & Thoms. (Annonaceae) in a Malaysian rain forest. Lengths of branches and parts of the branches lacking leaves ('bare' branches) were smaller in upper branches than in lower branches within crowns, whereas lengths of 'leafy' parts and the number of leaves per branch were larger in intermediate than in upper and lower branches. Maximum diffuse light absorption (DLA) of individual leaves was not related to sapling height or branch position within crowns, whereas minimum DLA was lower in tall saplings. Accordingly, branch-level light interception was higher in intermediate than in upper and lower branches. The leaf production rate was higher and leaf loss rate was smaller in upper than in intermediate and lower branches. Moreover, the branch production rate of new first-order branches was larger in the upper crowns. Thus, leaf and branch dynamics do not correspond to branch-level light interception in the different canopy zones. As a result of architectural constraints, branches at different vertical positions experience predictable light microenvironments in plagiotropic species. Accordingly, this pattern of carbon allocation among branches might be particularly important for growth and crown development in plagiotropic species. Polyalthia is a versatile genus of shrubs and trees found in tropic and sub-tropic regions. In this study, three clerodane diterpenes, kolavenic acid (1), polyalthialdoic acid (2), and 16alpha-hydroxy-cleroda-3,13(14)Z-dien-15,16-olide (3) isolated from Polyalthia longifolia leaves were evaluated for their apoptotic potential against human leukemia HL-60 cells. Compounds 2 and 3 inhibited cell proliferation with IC(5)(0) values of 21.8 and 13.7 muM, respectively. Morphological changes and DNA fragmentation analysis indicated that these diterpenes induce apoptotic cell death in the HL-60 cells. Our results revealed the importance of P. longifolia as a chemopreventive medicinal plant. (+info)Polyalthia is a genus of tropical trees in the family Annonaceae, characterized by their simple, alternate leaves and large, fleshy fruits containing numerous seeds, which do not have any direct relation to human medical conditions or diseases.
"Polyalthia" is a genus of flowering plants in the family Annonaceae, which is known for its tropical trees and shrubs. It's not a medical term, but a taxonomic category used in the classification of plants. The plants in this genus are native to Southeast Asia, Australia, and Pacific islands. They typically produce large, fleshy fruits that contain numerous seeds. Some species of Polyalthia have been used in traditional medicine in various cultures, although more research is needed to confirm their medicinal properties and safety.

Forest fireworks after the storms - Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM)
The Bulbophyllum vaginatum orchid blooms with clusters of creamy coloured flowers with filaments, resembling miniature fireworks. From the family Orchidaceae, this gregariously flowering orchid can grow up to 12 cm. The species loves hot temperature and high humidity. It also prefers a semi-shaded environment, thus we can see it grow on many large shady trees and often found in abundance on old trees in fairly exposed areas. This orchid species is widely distributed in Malaysia, and normally blooms 2-3 times a year with a period lasting 2-4 days. Besides Peninsular Malaysia, Bulbophyllum vaginatum is also widely distributed in Borneo, Peninsular Thailand, Sumatra, Java, and Maluku.. Usually, this epiphytic species will colonize most of the branches enveloping them all around. And when it blooms, the tree seems spotted with yellowish cream tiny flowers. It is believed that this gregarious flowering is usually triggered by rainstorms and a drop in temperature that typically happens after rains, ...
